By Mary Joy Cavañas
As recent attacks occur in some parts of the Middle East, the Iloilo City Government continues its close monitoring and coordination with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), along with the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) to ensure the safety of Ilonggo Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the area.
In her statement, Mayor Raisa Treñas, assured the public that the city government is closely monitoring the current situation and is on standby to assist the OFWs and their families.
According to the DMW, there is no current order for mandatory repatriation. The Iloilo City Government, on the other hand, also implemented its strong coordination with national authorities to ensure it can respond immediately to the situation.
Additionally, PESO is also coordinating with Barangay Employment Service Officers (BESOs) across barangays to boost information dissemination and provide guidance to families of OFWs.
Mayor Treñas also encouraged families of OFWs to immediately reach out to their respective BESOs or the PESO for inquiries and assistance.
She also cited the city’s commitment to give assistance for Ilonggo OFWs from Iloilo City that will be possibly repatriated due to the attacks in the Middle East.
Mayor Treñas also noted that the city has funds allotted under the Assistance for Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) to ensure that the affected individuals will be given financial assistance.
According to Mr. Gab Umadhay, manager of PESO-Iloilo City, over 200 Ilonggo OFWs from the city are currently in the Middle East. The city government is also waiting for an official directive regarding the implementation of mandatory repatriation.
Meanwhile, PESO-Iloilo City’s mobile number, 0949 712 3201 along with its Facebook page are also open for the families of OFWs in case they have concerns, inquiries, or needed assistance. (via Iloilo City Government)
